JS1 JET SUSTAINER CERTIFICATION COMPLETED WITHIN 6 MONTHS AFTER ENGINE TC

Congratulations to the certification team of JS completing the SACAA Type certification process for JET Sustainer variant of the JS1. This follows the successful completion of the EASA TC of the MD-TJ42 jet turbine by M&D Flugzeugbau at the end of 2015.

JS and M&D joined forces with the Jet project in 2011 when JS searched for a suitable turbine manufacturer to meet their Sustainer requirements. Certifying the turbine was no easy process – M&D and EASA had to establish the special conditions, as no requirements for jet turbines exists in the current CS-22 standards. This meant that tons of fuel were used to demonstrated the life and limitations of the Jet turbine engine. Testing the engine also implicated that both the M&D LS4 and the JS1 JET prototypes had sustained numerous flight tests.

JS had to do TC demonstration of the turbine fitted to the JS1 platform. To save time, JS completed the demonstration of compliance to the SACAA in parallel with M&D certifying the turbine in Europe.

Within six months after EASA awarded the certificate for the turbine to M&D, the SACAA approved the amendment to JS1 TC, allowing the installation of the Jet Sustainer in the JS1B and JS1C models.

Congratulations specifically to AP Kotze, lead engineer on the Jet Sustainer system, for completing the certification in such a short time. Also congratulations and much appreciation to the SACAA engineering team spending many days at the JS facilities observing tests and reviewing the compliance documentations.

The JET glider era has begun!
